First home gift ideas that feel personal
Housewarming and new home gifts · 2026-10-15

Someone's first home is a big moment. The best gift is not the most expensive but the one that makes the place feel like theirs. Here are ideas for first-home buyers and first-time renters, with a bit of thought about what is actually useful.
Think about what they do not yet have
New homes usually have the big items sorted, but the small comforts are missing. A print for a bare wall, a mug for the first cup of tea and a bag for the endless trips between the old place and the new are all things people often forget to buy.
Our wider guide to housewarming gift ideas covers the general approach. This one focuses on the first-home milestone.
A print for the first wall
Bare walls feel temporary. A framed print changes that quickly. The Banksia Botanical print is a warm, native piece for a lounge or hallway, and Tea by the Coast suits a bright kitchen. Each arrives in a real wood frame, ready to hang, in natural oak or black.

If your friends are renting, suggest they lean the frame on a shelf or sideboard first. An A4 print sits happily on a shelf. See framed art prints for sizes.
Mugs for the first cup
A pair of mugs is a small, joyful present. The Tea Time mug and Gum Blossom mug come in five colours, so you can match the new kitchen. They are dishwasher and microwave safe and sit well in a rental with shared cupboards.
A tote for the move
A cotton tote helps with the last-minute runs for light bulbs, cleaning products and a pot plant. The Steep Slowly tote is lettered by hand and comes in natural, black or white.

A small, personal touch
If your friends have a pet, a personalised portrait print with the pet's name helps the new home feel complete. See dog lover gifts and cat lover gifts.
A note that matters
Write a short card by hand. You might recall the first time you visited their old flat, or wish them many cups of tea in the new kitchen. We do not offer printed cards yet, so use one of your own.

When to order
Printed to order in Australia. Production takes 3 to 7 business days and delivery 2 to 5 business days. Shipping is a flat A$12.95, free over A$150. If you are not sure when they settle, order about two weeks before the move date and have the parcel sent to your own address. You can then hand it over on the day, in time for the first cup of tea.

Gifts for couples moving in together
A pair of mugs in two different colours suits a couple, and a framed print for the first shared wall gives them something to choose a spot for together. Pick a subject that feels neutral so neither person feels it belongs to the other, such as a tea still life or a botanical study.
Gifts for someone buying alone
Buying alone is a big step. A gift that says "this is your place now" is lovely: a framed print for the first wall and a note about how proud you are. Keep it warm and simple.
Frequently asked questions
What do you give someone for their first home?
A gift that makes the place feel like theirs, such as a framed print, a pair of mugs or a tote, with a handwritten note.
Is a framed print a good gift for renters?
Yes, but mention that it can be hung with fixings that suit their lease, and that a leaning display on a shelf works too.
