How to style botanical prints at home

Framed botanical print on a timber shelf with a ceramic jug, books and eucalyptus

Botanical prints are one of the easiest ways to make a room feel calm. They bring colour, softness and a bit of nature without needing much space. Here is a simple method to style them so they look planned rather than placed.

1. Choose the frame to suit the room

The frame changes how a botanical print feels. Natural oak is warm and relaxed, and it suits timber floors and linen. Black is crisper, which suits modern rooms and white walls. Every print we make arrives in a real wood frame with an acrylic front, ready to hang, in natural oak or black.

Our guide on frame colour and size guide covers how frame and wall colour work together. For a native look, try the Banksia Botanical print in oak.

2. Pick the right size and height

Size makes the biggest difference. As a rule, art should fill about two thirds of the width of the furniture below it. Hang the centre of the print about 145 cm from the floor. A 50 x 70 cm print suits above a sofa or bed, 30 x 40 cm above a desk or console and A4 on a shelf. Read our full wall art size guide for more.

3. Layer with real stems and ceramics

Botanical prints look best with a little of the real thing nearby. Lean a small framed print on a shelf, then add:

  • A ceramic vase with dried native stems.
  • A mug in a matching colour, such as the Gum Blossom mug.
  • A stack of books for height.

Keep the objects in odd numbers and vary their heights. Leave space around them so each piece reads clearly.

4. Keep to a calm palette

Botanical prints often use soft greens, ochres and terracotta. Pull one of those colours out in the room, for example a terracotta pot or a sage cushion, and keep everything else neutral. Our Australian native botanical decor ideas guide goes deeper on palettes.

5. Think about the room's purpose

  • Kitchen: a tea-themed print such as Morning Ritual feels at home next to the kettle.
  • Hallway: a larger botanical piece greets people as they arrive.
  • Bedroom: choose soft, quiet imagery for above the bed.
  • Living room: pair a print with a throw and a ceramic dish on a sideboard.

6. Look after the print

Hang it out of direct sunlight, away from steam, and dust the frame with a soft dry cloth. Wipe the acrylic front with a slightly damp microfibre cloth and no glass cleaner. See our care guide.

7. Let it grow with you

You do not need to style everything at once. Start with one print, then add a second a few months later. Our framed art prints come in three sizes, which makes it easy to build a small group over time. For ideas on that, read banksia and waratah meaning and styling.

Gifting a botanical print

A botanical print is a lovely gift because it arrives ready to hang. For a housewarming, pair it with a mug, and for Mother's Day add a handwritten note. See housewarming gift ideas.

How to order

Production takes 3 to 7 business days and delivery 2 to 5 business days. Shipping is a flat A$12.95, free over A$150.

Styling for different rooms

In a small bathroom, hang a print away from the shower, since steam and acrylic do not mix well. In a home office, a 30 x 40 cm print above the desk adds calm to a busy space. In a child's room, choose a soft subject and a frame with a rounded feel, and hang it out of reach.

When you rent

You can still style botanical prints in a rental. Lean prints on shelves and sideboards, or use removable hooks that suit your wall. Check your lease before hanging anything.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I hang botanical prints?

Hallways, dining areas, above a sideboard, in a kitchen or above a bed all work. Avoid direct sun and steamy spots.

Can I mix botanical prints with other art?

Yes. Keep the colours related and the frames consistent, and the mix will look deliberate.
